Staying at Mahali Mzuri in Kenya

Staying at Mahali Mzuri in Kenya

Mahali Mzuri means “beautiful place” in Swahili, but the phrase hardly does justice to what you’ll see at Mahali Mzuri in Kenya. This luxury safari camp is part of the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy, located in Kenya’s Maasai Mara ecosystem.

Easily one of the most breathtaking places in Africa, the camp is owned by Sir Richard Branson. This guy has been to every corner of the planet and has properties in some of the most exclusive, enchanting spots. Of course, I couldn’t resist checking out the remote African area that caught his eye.

Here’s my experience staying at Mahali Mzuri in Kenya.

Getting to Mahali Mzuri

The best way to get to the camp is from the Wilson Airport in Nairobi. From there, Mahali Mzuri is 150 miles (240 km) away.

If you don’t mind small planes and want to be a bit closer, the Olare Orok airstrip is serviced by Safarilink Aviation, Air Kenya, and Governors’ Aviation. You can also check out the Mara North airstrip, which is an hour’s drive from the camp, and you can find flights there from Safarilink Aviation or Air Kenya.

This flight unfortunately had a seriously small baggage weight allowance. I had to leave behind my tripod and a few other items, so be sure to plan in advance so you don’t have to shuffle your gear at the airport.

The Hotel

Named the favorite safari camp by Condé Nast Traveler, Mahali Mzuri in Kenya is a twelve-tent luxury safari camp. It only accepts a couple dozen guests at any point, and is all-inclusive of food, drinks and even laundry– so you get the VIP treatment at every step.

Offering a cozy lounge with a fireplace and an infinity pool, the main tent is the perfect place to unwind. It’s also the place to be if you’re hungry! The area features an over-size communal dining table for sharing safari tales and admiring the view.

The Rooms at Mahali Mzuri

There are six luxury tents on either side of the main tent. You can choose from ten different suites with king or twin beds. If you’re ready to treat yourself, you also have the option of a couple upgraded four-post king bed tents.

And trust me; this place puts the glam in glamping. The tents impress at every turn, but you’ll hardly notice your room when you’re taking in the ground-to-sky vista of this truly awe-inspiring land.

The Food at Mahali Mzuri

With top-notch in-house chefs, Mahali Mzuri is the best place to sample the greatest pan-African dishes. From bush BBQs to champagne picnics to your classic international faves, the camp has you covered.

All meals and nonalcoholic drinks are included in the cost of your stay, and they’re great at dealing with any special dietary needs, so just let them know in advance.

Each day starts with travelers meeting up at the communal table to chat about the day’s adventures while digging into the continental buffet of hot dishes and fresh breads.

Mahali Mzuri offers lunch on the main deck à la carte or at the pool; and for dinner, you can chat at the communal table, find a private table in the bush, or head back to your room to chill with some room service.

Activities at Mahali Mzuri

Mahali Mzuri offers twice-daily game drives, which were the highlight of my experience. The sights on this once-in-a-lifetime excursion were absolutely incredible. I saw something new every time, and the night drives were magical. The camp also offers customized trips and private hires, which are well worth looking into.

When you’re ready to put your feet up, the Nasaro spa is the place to be. It uses ethical African treatments and offers a full range of options.

Last but not least, you can’t go to Kenya without doing a Maasai community tour. The village is only ten minutes from Mahali Mzuri, and it will give you a glimpse into traditional local life.

From saying hi to the kids at school to helping milk the cattle, a Maasai community visit is unlike anything else you’ve ever done.

Fall Travel Style Guide: 2017 Edition

2017 Fall Travel Style Guide

Fall has arrived and “sweater season” is upon us! But you don’t have to stick to sweaters and sweatpants this fall– with these new style trends, you’ll find some inspiration to spice up your wardrobe and add some new travel-friendly styles to suitcase.

This fall, layer up with neutral, earth colors, and sleek mini skirts and leggings. Be sure to grab some embroidered booties, and style them with some fun  accessories.

Here’s my 2017 fall travel style guide!

Sweaters & Long Sleeves

Oversized sweaters or comfy long sleeves will be the most comfortable addition to your wardrobe, hands down. Pair with light denim or leggings, your favorite sneakers, and there you have it– a cute and casual outfit to cruise in.

A Line Skirts

Corduroy A-line skirts are coming back, and it’s a trend I can get on board with. Pair with a crop top, cardigan, or flowy blouse and it’s a perfect outfit for a day out.

Denim Jumpsuit

I’m a big fan of denim year round, and jumpsuits are so great for travel! Pair with a crop top and booties or white sneakers, and you’re set.

Tunics & Blouses

Make sure to grab a few travel-friendly tunics and long-sleeve blouses this fall. You can mix and match with any style of denim or leggings, as well as booties or sneakers!

Leggings

With colder weather on the horizon, there’s not better go-to than comfortable leggings that are stylish enough to rock with a tunic or cute sweater.

Blazers

Blazers and longline coats are a staple for this fall. I have a few styles in different neutral colors, and here are some of my go-to styles!

Booties

Black booties are a style staple year-round, and I love these basic Basel booties from Lucky Brand. This season embroidered booties are all the rage, and here are some of my favorites!

Bags

A cross body purse is essential for travel and day-to-day use. You’ll want one that can hold your camera, wallet, and any small personal items.

Accessories

It’s the perfect addition to boho-up an outfit or add some detail to a dress or denim pants. I am obsessed with Janessa Leoné’s new wide brim hats!

South Africa may be where I hang my hat these days, but Southern California will always be my home. Growing up here, I have so many memories of sun-drenched streets, gorgeous beaches, and the laid-back atmosphere that is hard to beat anywhere else.

I did a California coast road trip from LA up to San Francisco last year, and it reminded me why this place will always be number one in my heart.

From Disneyland to dive bars, few states– or even countries– offer as much rich diversity as California. People often think of Cali as an endless beach (and we do have some amazing shorelines for swimming, fishing, surfing, camping or just taking in the view) but the state is so much more than that.

Southern California has renowned museums, theaters, zoos, and of course, iconic Hollywood spots. With luxury shopping areas like Beverly Hills right alongside unbeatable vintage and independent shops, it’s a shopper’s dream destination.

Away from the water, one of a kind desert retreats like Palm Springs have been calling celebs, artists, and luxe lovers from around the world for decades.

And you can’t forget the food culture! If you follow me on Instagram, you already know that I’m obsessed with In-N-Out Burger. I have had sushi in Japan, pasta in Italy, tacos in Mexico, and tagine in Morocco, but a grilled cheese animal-style and fries will always be my ultimate comfort food. As soon as I arrive stateside, you know where to find me.

If you haven’t been to Southern California yet, it’s time to plan a visit. The weather is pretty much perfect 364 days per year so all you need are your shades, a bikini, and a good pair of shoes for exploring.

Tips for Cleaning Clothes While Traveling

Tips for Cleaning Clothes While Traveling

The travel game can be dirty business! Add a few sweaty days of exploring, take away the washing machine, and you’re left with some less-than-fresh clothes.

The good news is that it’s pretty easy to keep things under control if you just plan ahead. I’ve learned by trial and error what works, and what leaves a stinky suitcase.

Here are my essential tips for cleaning clothes while traveling.

clothesline

Hand Wash Clothes While Traveling

Hand washing can be an incredible effective and simple solution– you just have to know what you’re doing and plan in advance. Here’s how:

  • Bring Small Woolite Packs: These little guys were literally made for washing clothes in a tiny hotel room sink. They’ll leave your clothes spotless with minimal effort.
  • Wash in the Sink or Bathtub: Some places have “unpluggable” sinks, so if you have a hard time plugging the drain, try using a wet washcloth or socks!
  • Pack a Drying Line: I love this travel clothes string. Just toss it and a few clothes pins into a baggie and you’re set.
  • Check Your Bathroom: Sometimes hotels have a laundry line inside the bathroom so search around.
  • In a Pinch: If you can’t hang your clothes to dry, try rolling clothes tightly in a towel to squeeze out excess moisture. It will go a long way with lightweight fabric.
  • Grab a Bag: Usually hotels have laundry bags to stash dirty clothes or you can just track down a bag. Ask the hotel for a garbage or get one from a market.

Keep in Mind: Avoid packing heavy fabrics whenever possible– they are heavier in weight and take forever to dry! Pack lightweight fabrics that don’t wrinkle and will dry quickly.

I always travel with Aloha Dry Bags for damp swimsuits and clothes, and I would definitely recommend in case you are ever left with damp items when you need to pack up!

Clean Clothes with a Scrubba Bag

No gimmicks here. Scrubba Bag seriously does the job. The bag lies flat and is ultra suitcase friendly, which is the first test for any travel accessory to pass.

Be sure to bring your own soap, store your dirty clothes in the Scrubba Bag during your trip until you’re ready to wash, then go for it.

Laundry Services While Traveling

Lots of hotels have laundry options, which is the easiest way to get clothes clean. If you have delicates, you may want to also look for a local dry cleaner. The options will depend on where you stay, but you’ll find a they are especially common throughout Southeast Asia, and most international cities won’t make you travel too far.

Depending on where you are and what you’re washing, you can expect to pay around $1-3 per Kilo– which is SO much cheaper than packing a few extra kilos of clothes.

laundromat

Find a Laundromat During Your Trip

Most countries around the world have some communal location to do laundry. In Europe and US, you’ll find that the majority cities make it easy to track down a coin-operated washing machine.

The typical load costs $3-7. If you’re not in a Western country, ask your hotel. They are usually local professional shops that’ll do it for cheap.

Remember: Keep it simple! Depending on what you’re up to, you may find that you can extend the time between washes. Most things just don’t need to be washed after each wear unless you’re getting seriously sweaty.

Get out of the auto-wash habit and use your discretion (and your nose!) to see what really needs to be washed and what can be worn a few times before it’s thrown in the cycle.

Travel-Friendly Beauty Routines for Every Budget

Travel Friendly Beauty Hacks for Every Routines

As much as I love to travel, it can be tricky to feel “pretty” (or even presentable!) after a long-haul flight across the planet. Between jet lag and the difficulty of finding my fave products abroad, it’s not easy to keep a standard beauty routine going.

Fortunately, I’ve found a few tricks that help me look Instagram-ready from Mexico to Morocco and everywhere in between. With minimal makeup and tips that work for any budget, you can look flawless on the fly.

Here are my travel-friendly beauty routines for every budget!

blonde tea time south africa

– Whiter Teeth –

Having sparkling, pearly whites is one of the easiest ways to feel great (no matter what the rest of you looks like). I always try to keep my smile nice and bright so that I feel fresh even when I’m stumbling off a red-eye flight.

  • Budget-Friendly

Crest Whitestrips ($2/treatment): Surprise! I’ve never had my teeth professionally whitened. I have found that Crest Whitestrips offer incredible results without having to drop major $$$. They’re super travel-friendly and are easy to use for maintenance after getting professionally whitened as well. This set can give you up to six months of whiter teeth!

  • Investment

Professional Whitening: If you want to level up, professional whitening gives pro-quality results. As I mentioned, I’ve never gone the professional route, but it’s the quickest way to whiter teeth!

– Eyelashes –

Again, for lashes, it totally depends on what you’re working with. One of the easiest ways to limit your travel makeup regime is to kick the mascara!

  • Budget-Friendly

Get a Tint at Benefit Browbar ($20-23): If you have lush lashes, an eyelash tint from the cult favorite, Benefit Browbar, might be all you need to keep your lashes looking beautiful.

  • Investment

Eyelash Extensions: I’ve had eyelash extensions for close to 2 years now. Being blonde, my natural lashes literally do not exist without mascara. For those looking for more volume and length, eyelash extensions are an amazing option. And forget about old school falsies! Modern faux lashes can be completely natural looking! You’ll have to get strategic about maintaining extensions on the road because you need them filled every 2-3 weeks. However, I’ve found that many destinations around the world have caught onto the “amazingness” of eyelash extensions so I’ve been able to get mine filled everywhere from Bali to South Africa.

– Puffy Under Eyes –

I tend to have permanent, puffy eyes from constant air travel and dehydration. An under-eye beauty routine is absolutely essential for me!

  • Budget-Friendly

Freeze Spoons or Apply a Compress (Free!): This is your quickest and easiest option to get rid of puffy under eyes, but it is a short term solution. The nice thing is that it’s free and you can freeze spoons just about everywhere in the world!

Organys Eye Cream ($16): This eye cream depuffs, nourishes and softens the skin under your eyes to make them healthy & radiant.

  • Investment

Patchology FlashPatch Eye Gels ($50): I personally use Patchology FlashPatch Eye Gels because they’re packed with caffeine and hydrolyzed collagen, and are unbeatable for reducing puffiness and brightening my eyes. I love that they come in a jar of 30 so I don’t waste plastic on individually wrapped sets. They’re super travel-friendly and there are enough to use every day if needed!

Yellow Bikini in Malta

– Sun Protection –

Ask any gorgeous older woman and she’ll tell you the number one beauty care secret: daily SPF! It makes such a profound difference in how your skin looks both in the long and short term. Let’s not forget about the health aspect either. We often talk about sun protection like it’s just for the beach but SPF is a real lifesaver — and, even when I’m not in the sun, I use it on my face and hands every day!

  • Budget-Friendly

Cotz Face SPF 40 ($18): This affordable face cream helps to prevent age-marks, wrinkles, spots, and inelasticity.

  • Investment

COOLA Mineral Face SPF ($26): Made in sunny San Diego (just like me!), this is really good stuff at a great price for organic suncare! COOLA has lots of different products — from BB creams, to SPF lip protection and sport sunscreens. I love their mineral 30 SPF in matte tint! I use it as a primer under my makeup on hot days to keep my skin protected and from feeling greasy.

Shiseido Sports BB SPF 50+ ($35): Honestly, this product is absolutely amazing. It applies heavier than your typical BB cream so I use it as an all-in-one sunscreen and makeup. It’s SPF 50 and is super waterproof (I’ll swim in it all day and it stays on perfectly)!

    – Dry Skin –

With so much time spent on airplanes, my biggest issue is dry skin. Anytime you are flying, it’s important to drink at least ½ liter of water for every hour that you’re in the air. I also apply a nice serum before using moisturizer every morning, and before and during flights.

  • Budget-Friendly

Face Cream Moisturizer ($18): This organic, anti-aging facial moisturizer hydrates and softens your face. It’s great for day or night!

TruSkin Serum ($20): This affordable serum is proven to reduce appearance of wrinkles, boosts collagen, and improves skin elasticity.

Mario Badescu Moisturizer ($24): If you’re on a long haul flight, apply moisturizer at least once before, and then halfway through. It’s worth spending a few extra dollars on a good moisturizer, and I adore this moisturizer because they’ve got something for every skin type AND sell travel-sized bottles.

  • Investment

PCA Skin ($71): Invest in a high-quality serum to lock in moisture before applying your moisturizer.

Fresh Rose Hydrating Cream ($55): This gel cream contains rosewater, rose flower oil and jojoba oil for soothing and nourishing benefits.

Get Regular Facials: Investing in regular moisturizing facials has changed my life! Whether you’re flying a lot, living in a dry climate, or just naturally have dry skin, I’d highly recommend a routine of daily skin serum and moisturizer plus regular facials.

Blonde wearing flower crown in Hawaii

– Eyebrows –

For beautiful brows, there are a couple of solid options, and the best route for you totally depends on your eyebrows. I have found that by investing in my eyelashes and brows, I’ve cut my beauty routine in half.

  • Budget-Friendly

Get Tint at Benefit Browbar ($20-23): Before getting microblading, I would get my eyebrows tinted ever 2-3 weeks. With blonde hair, my eyebrows are basically non-existent without a little love. I love Benefit’s Browbar for a classic wax and eyebrow tint. It makes a huge difference!

  • Investment

Microblading: I have found that light-haired ladies (including yours truly) benefit in a big way from microblading. Ultimately, I love both options because they’ll let you wake with flawless brows. However, for the investment, I think you actually save money by microblading. I had my brows done by my friend Caitlin from Freshly Browed and would only recommend using someone qualified for the procedure. The process involves two appointments with a little down time in between, but it’s totally worth it. Nearly a year later and my brows are still full and beautiful!

– Breakouts –

I’ve had acne my whole life. I went on Accutane as a teen and still get adult breakouts. It’s such a frustrating problem but the right treatments can make a world of difference.

  • Budget-Friendly

Eradikate by Kate Sommorville: As far as over-the-counter picks, there’s nothing like Eradikate by Kate Sommorville. I also love their ultra strong spot treatment for an overnight fix.

  • Investment

Dermatologist Consultation + Tretinoin and Mental Health + Diet:  For me, the biggest change came when I went to dermatologist and got a tretinoin prescription (also sold as Retin-A). You can buy tretinoin in stores or a get a stronger option from a dermatologist. The other game changer for me was realizing what foods and stressors caused my flare ups. I recently eliminated dairy from my diet after realizing it seriously triggered breakouts (still too soon to talk about how much I miss cheese though!), and tried to reduce stress as much as possible in my life!

6 Ways to Spend Less on Travel

Ways to Spend Less on Travel

From students to parents to busy professionals, there are always reasons that people feel they can’t make their globetrotting dreams come true, and it usually is because of the price tag.

While travel does involve costs– airfare, accommodation and some activities– there are many alternative ways to travel that not only save money but allow you to have new experiences and follow your wanderlust.

The truth it, whatever your budget is, you can make it work.

In fact, depending on your destination, you might even spend less seeing the world than you do staying in your own neck of the woods.

Here are 6 ways to spend less on travel that’ll change everything!

plane ride over zambia

Getting to Your Location

In the summer, most destinations are at their most expensive. If it’s possible to travel in the off-season, do it! Places like Europe are perfect in the so-called “shoulder season” (April through mid-June and September through October). The weather is better, places are less crowded, and you’ll save a lot of cash.

Knowing how to find cheap plane tickets is an art at any time of year. The number one strategy is to be patient. Finding a good price means you’ll have to do some serious searching.

Here are some ways I find cheap fights:

  • Turn on AirfareWatchDog and keep an eye on deals when they arise
  • Check airlines’ low fare calendar
  • Check Skyscanner to compare fares
  • Look for indirect flights or nearby airports
  • Avoid extra fees (like choosing my seat, priority boarding, and checked bags)

If you’re debating the best way to travel, check out the Rome2 Rio website. It’ll compare bus, train, air, ferry, and rideshare options so you can decide what makes the most sense for your trip. Keep in mind that sometimes combining transportation (for example, plane and train) can often be the cheapest pick.

For ground travel, look into multi-way passes. Europe has some great deals that’ll let you see the continent on the cheap. Look into Interflix Euro Bus Pass and the Eurail pass for some bargains that will cure your wanderlust.

Apartment rental in Reykjavik

Budget Accommodation

I love AirBnb — you’ll typically find accommodation cheaper than a hotel (and you can nab this AirBnB discount from me!). It’s even more budget-friendly if you get a place where you can use the kitchen to cook in!

You can also check out Homestay.com and VRBO for more great places where you can truly live like a local and explore amazing neighborhoods.

Consider hostels as well, and keep in mind that many do offer private rooms. Check out my post on the truth about staying in a hostel if you’re debating whether the experience is right for you!

If you want to go for a hotel, look for ones that are located a little farther from the city center as they are usually cheaper.

Rooms tend to be cheaper there, and most cities have great public transportation systems.

Train Travel Europe

Transportation

Taxis can tend to get expensive so I try to use Uber whenever it’s available. Metros are often the best way to travel, and I recommend going underground for travel in almost any major city.

Google Maps has a public transit option that works in most cities. Just type in where you want to go and it will tell you exactly which lines and busses you need to take to get there!

Of course, when you can, walking is ideal– especially in Europe!

A lot of big cities also have cheap and easy bike rentals that allow pick up and return around the city. Be sure to search for these bike share programs while you’re abroad.

View from London River Cruise

Activities

The way you organize your daily activities can make or break your budget. Some of my best memories have actually been on adventures that didn’t cost a dime!

Here are some ideas for ways to save on activities:

  • Skip Pricey Tours: Download audio books or guides, and listen where you’re going. There are even some great free apps that’ll let you explore at your own pace.
  • Ask for a Discount: Always look for special rates for students, seniors, kids, groups, or whatever might apply to you. It never hurts to ask!
  • Check Online for Special Deals and Discounts Before You Go: Sites like Groupon are all over the world and give major discounts. They can also be a good source of info on local events.
  • Research Free Activities and Museums: Many major tourist attractions are free on certain days. You can find an endless list of free activities for most big cities.
  • Do an All-inclusive Sightseeing Tour: If you’re visiting for the first time and you know you want to see it all, consider hop-on/hop-off buses or city passes that’ll take you everywhere.

ice cream in japan

Eating

Forget overpriced touristy restaurants. The best way to try authentic grub is on a shoestring budget!

  • Don’t Ever Start Your Day Hungry: Take advantage of included breakfasts at hotels and hostels. Always ask about it when you check-in.
  • Go Grocery Shopping: Local shops give a cool insight into local life, and you’ll want to stop at one at the beginning of your trip to pick up breakfast, snacks, and more if you have a kitchen.
  • Go Alfresco: Opt for a picnic in the park rather than a sit-down meal.
  • DIY It: Aim to alternate between going out for meals and creating your own. Think of simple fixes like sandwich and deli items. Even if you can’t cook, grocery store ready-meals are a good budget solution.
  • Eat Out Midday: Lunches are typically cheaper than dinner, so choose that time to head out to a restaurant.
  • Try Tapas Style: Order appetizers instead of one large entrée. It’s usually cheaper, and you can try multiple dishes.
  • Bring a Refillable Water Bottle: You will be surprised how much buying plastic water bottles adds up, both in cash and environmental waste.
  • Check Out Food Tours: Many cities do a 2-for-1 tour plus dining deal.
  • Choose Local Wines or House Wines: These choices are both the cheapest and the best in most cases!
  • Skip the Bread: In a lot of countries, especially within Europe, you pay for the bread even though they bring it to the table without asking.
  • Know How to Tip: Few countries tip as much as the US does (and in some places tipping is even rude!), so get to know the tipping customs.

Solo Female Traveler in Marrakech

Shopping

There’s nothing like treating yourself to some retail therapy while you’re away, but there’s definitely a right way and a not-so-cost-effective way.

  • Skip the Souvenirs: Find one special thing to bring home that really represents your trip.
  • DIY It: Take lots of pictures and create a DIY souvenir when you get home. Search for modern collage inspiration online.
  • Think Small: Shop at street markets instead of at the big department stores to get off the beaten path.
  • Shop Local: Opt for stores you can’t find in your hometown for truly special items.
  • Get Tax Back: Remember to keep your receipts because you can often get tax refunds at the airport at the end of your trip!
