Travel Jobs Around the World: Ski Chalet Host

Ski-Chalet-feat-image

Travel Job

Ski Chalet Host

Travel Job Ski Chalet

The Job Description

For those of you who don’t know, a “chalet” is a wooden, multi-level lodge found in ski resorts and towns. As a chalet host, you are expected to take care of the cooking, cleaning and service for the chalet and its guests.

Basically, a group of vacationers will rent a chalet for a week, and it is the responsibility of the chalet host to take care of any and all responsibilities concerning the guests.

A typical day as a chalet host might look something like this:

  • Wake up before the guests, prepare and serve coffee, tea and breakfast
  • After the guests leave to go on their morning ski, tidy up all of the bedrooms, bathrooms and other areas of the chalet
  • Take some free time from about 10-11 am until the late afternoon when you can enjoy a nap, a meal or some time on the slopes (if you have the energy!)
  • Return to duty around between 3-4pm, and prepare and serve a 3-course dinner and drinks to the guests until around 10pm

This typical schedule will run 5 days out of the week, with one remaining day off, and the last day as the dreaded change-over day! Change-over occurs on the day that one group of guests leaves and another group of guests arrives.

The chalet host will have to prepare and serve breakfast for the departing group, and then rush to strip and change the beds, deep clean the rooms and prepare for the arrival of the new group. In addition to all of these responsibilities, you may also have to do some driving or grocery shopping for the chalet.

Although this schedule may not seem as glamorous as what you may have assumed, there are definite perks to the job!

As a chalet host, you can expect that your employer will cover your accommodation, food and season ski passes/insurance in addition to your wage. There is also an opportunity to earn tips from each group of guests!

Another perk to the job- this is a seasonal job which draws many young, fun work-hard, play-hard types. Although you may come out of the season burnt out from the job, I guarantee you that you will also come out with amazing memories and new found friends!

Travel Job Ski Chalet

Chalets range in size, and so there is also some variation with the job descriptions of chalet hosts depending on the company they choose to work with.

Some chalets run with a single host, while others run with large teams. If you are working at a larger chalet with chefs, drivers, etc., you may only have housekeeping or service duties.

Chalets will also range in character!

Those working at luxury chalets will need to provide a higher level of service. Although they have an opportunity to earn higher wages and tips, they will also be required to have experience in order to land the job, and be faced with more demanding hours and responsibilities.

Where in the World the Job Exists

Popular chalet job locations are:

  • Anywhere in the European Alps
  • France
  • Austria
  • Switzerland
  • New Zealand
  • Canada
  • Colorado, USA

Awesome Job Opportunity: The Ski Week

The Ski Week is another amazing alternative for winter-lovers out there! It is a series of week-long boutique ski festivals which take place in handpicked mountain towns across the world, like the USA, Austria, Japan and France. From interns in office-based roles to event coordinators and brand ambassadors, see if there is an opportunity for you- or just join the fun!

How to Get a Job as a Ski Chalet Host

First things first: you will need to create a professional looking resume, and include descriptive info such as your nationality, gender, passport expiration and age.

It is important to highlight any previous employment related to hospitality, service, cooking, housekeeping or restaurant and bar positions!

Try to demonstrate that you have experience in all or many of the areas of what may be required in the very versatile position that is a chalet host. You will also want to mention your interest and experience with skiing and/or other winter sports.

If you are not the best cook in the world, or would like to get a bit of practice with hosting responsibilities before the start of the season, there are training courses and classes that will help you to land a job or that will be included upon employment with certain companies.

If you don’t have the funds or ability to go to a training course…call on YouTube! I am sure that there a million tutorial videos out there on anything from how to make the perfect poached egg, to ironing bedsheets, to napkin folding. Make a list of potential chalet host responsibilities, and start YouTubing your way to success!

Once your have your resume in order, start applying! Because this is a seasonal job, running from Dec until April, chalet companies will begin recruiting for the upcoming season months beforehand!

You will have to fill out online applications for most positions in addition to sending your resume. There are many chalet companies that post available positions on online ski-job specific employment searches, or you can apply directly through a company website.

Search Engine Examples

Website Examples

You can also call the chalets directly. This may help you by showing your interest, and being able to speak directly with a recruitment agent- OR- you may get redirected to their website and told to apply online. I think that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain if you just give a quick call, and see for yourself!

What Qualifications They Are Looking For

For most chalet host jobs, you do not need to take special courses or have a college degree in order find work. Because of the low wage and short-term contracts, many of these jobs target students on gap year or travelers looking for a season of work- professional experience isn’t typically required.

If you were to take one of the cooking courses mentioned above, or have a degree in hospitality for example, I am sure that you would have better luck finding a job, but these are not required qualifications.

Work through previous ski seasons or in the restaurant industry would also be preferred, but is not necessarily a prerequisite!

Something else that would be desirable but is not a requirement: it definitely helps if you are able to speak more than one language. You will be interacting with guests from around the world, and having more than one language under your belt will come in handy for sure at some point.

I have noticed that some of the jobs in the European Alps require an EU or UK passport. Make note that some companies may not be able to legally hire from outside of Europe, and redirect your search as needed. You might also be asked for proof of a driver’s license and clean driving record.

Availability & Pay as a Ski Chalet Host

As mentioned, this is a seasonal job! The ski season generally runs from mid-November and December until April.

As for pay…let’s just say that the number on your weekly paycheck will definitely not be your reason for becoming a chalet host! This is the type of experience thats more about the location, included benefits, new friendships, and opportunity to work outside of the office cubicle!

Chalet hosts will only be earning between $100-$200/week. HOWEVER, because major expenses such as accommodation, food and ski passes are covered, you will not need to spend much money through the season. You will also have an opportunity to earn tips!

Although this may not be ideal for people who are looking to earn and save a lot of money, it is a good option for someone who is wanting to spend a season in a unique and fun work environment, with the majority of their living costs covered!

How to Pack in One Suitcase as a Couple

Pack-in-One-Suitcase-as-a-Couple-Feature-Image

It is pretty standard in the airline industry to allow one carry-on and one personal item per traveler on flights, but checked baggage varies quite a bit.  Given a scenario where you have to pay for checked baggage, packing in one suitcase as a couple is a great idea!

If you don’t travel often or if you’re traveling on a new airline, you’ll want to be sure to check your airlines baggage policy.  Every airline seems to have a slightly different policy in regard to the number of bags one can bring on a trip, the weight allowed per bag, and of course the cost per bag.

So how do you do it?  Well, obviously just like the covers in bed, she gets 90% and you get the other 10% (thank God for your carry-on)!

But really, packing in one suitcase as a couple is a smart, efficient, and cost effective way to travel.  If you’re on the go between planes, trains, and automobiles, the less luggage the better.

So here are our best tips for how to pack in one suitcase as a couple!

How to pack in one suitcase as a couple

– Be Realistic –

You don’t need 7 pairs of jeans for a weeklong trip.  A vacation is supposed to be an escape from home, yet we spend so much money and effort trying to make vacation as much like home as possible.

How to pack in one suitcase as as couple

– Share Hoodies & Jackets –

Jackets are the demise of efficient packing.  Packing more than a couple hoodies/jackets in a suitcase can quickly fill it.  Alex often steals Michael’s hoodies, so why not keep the trend going and make packing easier?  Bring a couple of his hoodies or jackets and you’re both covered.

How to pack in one suitcase as as couple

– Packing Squares –

Packing squares are not only a great way to keep your clothes separated from one another’s but also a great way to pack more clothes into a smaller area.  They also work great for separating clean clothes from dirty laundry on the way home.  Oh and another thing – they’re cheap!

How to pack in one suitcase as as couple

– Wear Sandals –

We honestly wear sandals about 90% of the time but of course some occasions call for shoes.  Plan to wear sandals when appropriate and you’ll save tons of space on shoes and socks.

– Share Toiletries When Possible –

Obviously guys care far less about quality hair products but things like shaving cream, mouth wash, and body wash are super easy to share.  Plan to share toiletries on trips and you’ll save loads of space.

Announcing: My First Cruise and Visiting My 50th Country

My First Cruise

As some of you might already know, I’ve traveled the world pretty extensively, but have yet to go on a cruise. Throughout my travels, a cruise wasn’t something I was super eager to do. I’m the typical “wanderlust” that hates sitting still and hardly ever follows a set plan.

But, for more than a few reasons, a cruise is the perfect way for me to travel into the New Year.

2015 has been a busy year. I spent nearly 8 months traveling. Unpacking fully, maybe once or twice before packing again for the next trip. I also brought my assistant on full-time to keep up with the business. Both of us putting in over 40 hours each- and mostly, working on the road.

While this isn’t a cry for pity – I am absolutely grateful for the life I live, being a freelancer and owning my own business, and the opportunities I have – but, I need a vacation. A couple of weeks to be still, to focus on being present and to find routine in my life again.

It’s funny the things you miss when you travel so much. A familiar barista; your favorite yoga class on Monday nights; a day sat in pajamas binge watching a new HBO series.

A cruise is exactly what I need right now.

San Juan to Rio de Janeiro on Crystal Symphony

My First Cruise with Crystal Cruises

San Juan to Rio de Janeiro on Crystal Symphony
I leave next week for the 15-day Brazilian Holiday cruise with Crystal Cruises. After departing Puerto Rico, we’ll be cruising to Trinidad and Tobago and French Guiana for a tropical Christmas, before arriving in Brazil and spending New Year’s Eve on the beach in Rio.

Crystal Cruises is often referred to as the #1 luxury cruise line in the world. Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler have awarded Crystal Cruises with the title “World’s Best Cruise Line” each year for nearly a decade. That’s some serious recognition.

San Juan to Rio de Janeiro on Crystal Symphony

What I’m Most Excited For

  • Unpacking and hanging up my clothes for two whole weeks (in a deluxe stateroom with verandah)
  • Daily pilates, yoga and body sculpt classes (I don’t know the last time I could take an exercise class every day!)
  • Gourmet food and premium wines (did I mention it’s entirely all inclusive?! Bring on the vino!)
  • Pampering at the spa & salon and relaxation poolside
  • Shore Excursions (including scuba diving in Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago!)
  • Magic Castle® at Sea (aka entertainment and classes with magicians, mentalists and ventriloquists)

San Juan to Rio de Janeiro on Crystal Symphony

Traveling to My 50th Country

Aside from all the excitement onboard the ship, I’ll also be traveling to my 50th country on this trip. Technically, I’ll have traveled to 43 out of 193 United Nations member countries. But, for those seeking to travel to “every” country and territory in the world, the Traveler’s Century Club’s list is the official list of world travelers. On that list, I’ll have traveled to 53 out of 324 countries & territories after this trip!

My goal in travel is never about how many places I see in this lifetime, but about the quality of my experiences. However, it’s a big milestone to celebrate! Here’s a breakdown of the countries we’ll be visiting and how the two different lists rank:

United Nations Countries

Puerto Rico

42. Trinidad and Tobago

French Guiana

43. Brazil

50. Puerto Rico

51. Trinidad and Tobago

52. French Guiana

53. Brazil

The Blonde Abroad Mom

I’m bringing my mom. It’s her first trip abroad. Ever.

And now, for the biggest, most personal and most exciting announcement for this whole trip: I get to share it with my maker!

My mom is one of the hardest working and most caring people I know. She has also been my biggest support system throughout my life and especially since becoming a travel blogger. Yet, she’s never actually traveled internationally.

Despite having personally traveled (a lot), the biggest trip we ever took as a family was a road trip to Utah. When I was 10. We spent all of our vacations outdoors, in tents and on road trips. But, at some point, we just stopped traveling altogether.

I discovered travel in college, but my mom discovered excuses. You’d think as a travel blogger, I could convince the most important in my life that travel doesn’t have to be scary, expensive or hold you back from your career. SO, after all these years, I’m finally taking matters into my own hands 😉

I couldn’t be more excited for this trip and to share the experience day by day with everyone! I’ll be taking over the Crystal Cruises Instagram from December 19th – January 3rd, so be sure to give them a follow and make sure you’re also following The Blonde Abroad on Instagram for updates on our adventure.

Do you have any tips for my first cruise? For any of the destinations I’ll be visiting? Or for my mom’s first trip abroad? I’d appreciate any advice!

The Muggle’s Guide to Visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Muggle's Guide to Visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

For those of us that literally grew up with the characters in the books and movies, visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a dream come true. But, even if you don’t count yourself a fan of the books or the movies, Universal Orlando’s tribute to the world of Harry Potter is an incredible experience.

Here’s the Muggle’s Guide to visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

A Park Within Two Parks

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is located at Universal Studios Orlando Resort (with a new theme park coming to LA in 2016!) and features interactive experiences, shops and thrilling rides.

It actually consists of two inner parks: Diagon Alley and HogsmeadeDiagon Alley is located inside Universal Studios and Hogsmeade is inside Island’s of Adventure and both are connected by the Hogwarts Express.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley

I recommend getting a 2-day park to park pass, that will give you the freedom and time to explore both to your heart’s delight—plus it gives you access to all the other rides at Universal Orlando. The pass even includes a third-day-free option!

Tip! Before you go: Download the Universal Orlando Wait Times App to know how long each line is for the rides in real time.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley

Check out Diagon Alley, the newest addition to Harry Potter inside Universal Studios that opened last summer 2014. The park features Escape from Gringotts—a 3D ride that includes animatronic goblins, fire-breathing dragons and even a glimpse of Lord Voldemort!

You can also visit iconic shops like Ollivanders Wand Shop, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions, Magical Menagerie, Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment and Quality Quidditch Supplies.

Be sure to stumble down Knockturn Alley to take a peak inside Borgin and Burkes!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Butterbeer

Fun Tips for Your First Visit to Diagon Alley

  • Grab lunch at The Leaky Cauldron. I was incredibly impressed with the quality of food at Universal Parks and especially at the Leaky Cauldron. They make their bread fresh daily and even import food from the UK for authenticity.

Lunch at the Leaky Cauldron

  • Get dessert at Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour. Try a scoop of strawberry peanut butter with a scoop of salted caramel blondie, then thank me later.
  • Of course, don’t forget to try Butterbeer! You can try it at both parks, but, if you’re up for it, try all four ways it’s served in Diagon Alley: cold, frozen, hot or as ice cream! (PS it’s non alcoholic so kids can enjoy too!)

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Butterbeer

  • Get an interactive wand to interact with all kinds of shop windows and props throughout both parks. You can make fountains squirt water, turn lights on and off in shop windows and even try the “wingardium leviosa” spell to float a feather. It’s a ton of fun for both kids and adults!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Interactive Wand

  • And, the dragon atop Gringotts breaths fire every ten minutes, so you won’t miss it! You’ll first hear a low rumble then prepare yourself for the heat!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley

Be Prepared!

Take heed—both Escape from Gringotts and Ollivanders Wand Shop are extremely popular and lines can be long, so be prepared to wait 2+ hours on crowded days.

The Wizarding World is immensely popular, so plan ahead and arrive at least 15-30 minutes ahead of the park opening time.

As with most theme parks, it’s crowded—so go early in the day to catch the most popular rides first. Wear good walking shoes, because you’ll be walking  and standing on your feet in lines—quite a lot!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogwarts Express

Hogwarts Express

Transportation between the two parks got WAY more fun with the addition of Hogwarts Express in 2014. From Diagon Alley, you can return to the streets of London inside Universal Studios and enter King’s Cross Station.

As someone that’s visiting London on countless occasions, there is little difference between “the tube” here and the real thing! There are even street performers inside. How’s that for authenticity?

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogwarts Express

You’ll make your way to Platform 9 3/4 and hop aboard for another interactive experience. Once onboard, you’ll look out an animated window through the streets of London, past the Dark Forest and then arrive into Hogsmeade.

But that’s not before a close encounter with a Dementor of course!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogsmeade

Hogsmeade

Here you’ll find Honeydukes Sweet Shop, the Three Broomsticks Restaurant, and a plethora of souvenir shops. Catch a ride on the Dragon Challenge roller coaster and send a local postcard from the Hogsmeade Post Office- stamped with a special Owl Post postmark.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Honeydukes

If you find a long line at Ollivanders in Diagon Alley, don’t worry! You can pick up your very own magic wand at the Ollivanders in Hogsmeade.

For “of age” witches and wizards, you can grab even enjoy Firewhiskey at the Hog’s Head!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle

Hogwarts Castle

The castle is the star of the show at Hogsmeade, where you can hop on the Forbidden Journey ride, a multi-sensory ride where you’ll soar above the castle with Harry Potter.

But, the queue to this ride is an experience in itself. This is a ride you’ll be happy to wait in line for!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Sorting Hat

The queue is filled with rooms and settings from the books and films, including Dumbledore’s office, the Defense Against the Dark Arts class room, and the Gryffindor common room.

You’ll even encounter moving paintings from the movies in a real world setting. Stop and listen as the paintings talk amongst each other. It’s awesome!

Universal Studios Resort

Where to Stay?

Be sure to book a room at an on-site hotel. You’ll get quick access to the Universal Studios without the hassle of parking. I stayed at Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort, an on-site hotel that is both fun and affordable.

Some on-site hotels offer premium benefits included in your stay, like Express Passes for front of the line privileges. But all on-site hotel guests enjoy early Park Admission to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, one hour before the theme park opens.

What to Pack for a Week in Whistler

What to Pack for a Week in Whistler

Whistler is one of the most popular winter travel destinations in the world. In one week, I explored Whistler’s winter wonderland by going on a scenic helicopter ridesnowmobiling, snowboarding, zip lining, and even dog sledding!

The weather in Whistler in the winter is cold, but could also depend on what the snowfall is like. When I first arrived, there had hardly been any snow. Two days later, we had snow dump for three days straight! Layers are super important to pack for Whistler so you’re prepared for anything.

Use my packing ideas below, but revise as needed based on weather and season for when you plan your own trip to Whistler!

Dog Sledding Whistler

My Trip Details

  • Travel Dates: Early January
  • Season: Winter
  • Weather: Expect -5°C (22°F) average daily alpine temperatures during most of the winter months.

Maple Latte Whistler

What to Pack for a Week in Whistler

  • Essentials

1. Knit Cap // You’ll definitely need something warm on the top of your head. I brought a beanie and an alpaca fur hat that I got in Peru so I stayed nice and toasty!

2. Chunky Scarf // Pack a nice chunky scarf to keep you warm.

3. Snow Gloves // It’s cold. Bring two pairs- especially if you plan to ski or snowboard. If they have touchscreen pads (like this pair) it’s a huge bonus so you don’t need to take them off to snap photos on from your smartphone.

4. Wool Socks // Trust me on this, invest in some heavy wool socks. They wick away moisture and keep your feet dry and warm.

5. Versatile Bag // Travel bags that double as handbags and backpacks are my go to. You can easily go from a day around town to a day of exploring without worrying about your bag.

  • Outerwear

6. Heavy Coat // It’s cold. Don’t skimp on a nice, heavy coat.

7. Ski Jacket // If you plan to ski or snowboard, bring a warmer ski jacket. Snowboarding in California (where I’m from) doesn’t always require a heavy ski coat. But you’ll need a warm one in Whistler!

8. Ski Pants // Same goes with your pants. Get a nice warm pair that’s gonna keep you dry.

9. Stylish Coat // Whistler has a great downtown area where you may want to look nice to go out to eat or grab a cocktail. Don’t forget a few stylish pieces!

10. Poncho // I love ponchos for easy winter style. Get a nice wool poncho to pair with jeans or leggings for an easy day to night look.

11. Draped Cardigan // I also love chunky, draped cardigans in the winter. They’re perfect for layering and look super cute.

Visiting the Scandinave Spa in Whistler

  • Layers

12. & 13. Long Sleeve Tees for Layering // The key to staying warm in Whistler is layering. Bring some basic long sleeves to add or remove throughout the day and night.

14. Sweater Dress // A sweater dress is perfect for a night out in Whistler. Keep in mind you won’t need anything too fancy since Whistler style is super casual.

15. Swimsuit // Two words: Scandinave Spa

  • Pants
